I don't understand the hate, at all. I love/d this game.I would play multiplayer with a friend of mine for hours on end. We'd play for 4-6 hour sessions. And it would only crash a couple times.
Yeah, there were issues with it going out of sync and stuff but I have those issues with CK2 as well. It's a great game. It's not exactly along the same vein as the other Paradox games (i.e. Grand strategy) but it's still a fantastic game. That being said, I wouldn't pick it up for more than 5-10 dollars.
Only because there are problems with it, some bugs and some ways to cheat the game by being gamey.Edit: The only real complaints I have is that the multiplayer was slow as Hell. But my friend and I would boot it up and play and I'd watch a movie or two on tv while it went along doing stuff as necessary. Allowed for a lot of micro managing as well which I did if I felt there was a need for it.
But yeah, I don't understand why everyone hates on it so much:(. I have put several hundred hours into SR2020, most of it modding and about 80 of it actually playing.Do not buy.It pains me to say those three words, as SR2020 is exactly what I want in a grand strategy game. Near future, global, lots of high tech stuff. However, the developers put far too much effort grognarding all the old tech and military OOBs and not enough effort into the game itself. The AI is incapable of doing anything.
It is crashy. And, worst of all, the developer is unwilling to do anything with it.In most cases I saw their responses to bug reports as 'we are not going to fix this', or 'the AI is simply there to be conquered, nothing more' or worst of all 'the engine does not support that'. Then modders made the game support that.So yes, do not buy.
I am sorry Battlegoat, I really wanted to love SR2020 but it is in a shambles. If you already bought it, I am so sorry, but there's a 2020 mod for Supreme Ruler: Cold War which does SR2020 better than itself. I played it for a bit, only managed one good play through for about a year or two in game I think where I conquered the western half of the USA, western Canada, and all of Mexico as California. I did this all while flaying around like an idiot not knowing how to do anything. Also I was upset to find out that several in-game technologies do nothing at all because Battle-goat never finished programming them (they litteraly just put in the name for the tech and that's it!
For example the cyber warfare stuff). It's not the best game out there - that's for sure. The AI is terrible; every country mass produces Artillery and AA batteries around cities making it near impossible to fight wars.
Diplomacy is non-existent as the slightest wrong turn and the whole world is on your back, but they never do anything. Despite these fatal flaws, I have enjoyed playing it because once you learn the mechanics you can utterly destroy everyone no matter their power. If you wish to play it, be an island nation because the dumb AI cannot invade islands for shit. Knowing that there are other, better games to buy I don't recommend it; the only reason I got it was because I'd never heard of any other Grand Strategies.
